Petable Portraits, Pet Portraits, Pet Paintings and Pet Art by Daniele Jones

Here are two of the originals. The photo our portrait is based on has a blue color cast and a lot of camera distortion which can easily be fixed. The photo below shows Beau's colors better and his gorgeous, impossibly blue eyes!

Pet Portrait of Beau in Colored Pencil

Beau is an award winning Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog. In fact he has made it into the history books with the distinction of being the first UKC Champion bobtail Catahoula. And he's a big goof—really happy, willing to please, and do anything to make you laugh, says his owner. Beau is also a great hiking companion, read all about him on uperpest journal, his owners blog.

The composition has changed slightly from the original picture to make Beau a little more prominent. At this stage, the major areas are lightly outlined and I've just started working on the bridge behind his head. He's in such a great forest area that I want to get out there and go camping with him!

Now the background is all there but not finished. I'm saving Beau for last because he will be the most fun to draw. I will have use my imagination to draw what his chest would look like and where is back legs should be placed because the bottom of the photo ends higher than what I've chosen to show here.

  • Stage 3 portrait of Beau
Beau is starting to emerge! I've got the basic colors of his face in and will start to blend and refine the contours of his face and textures of his fur. I've also been working on the background a little more, but I'll have to see what Beau looks like finished before I can finish them.

Almost done! Just a few finishing touches and Beau will be on his way to his owner. I've cropped this down to show what would be seen through a 16" x 12" mat.

More to come...
